It's time to poke some more fun at other people's reading habits! If you have purchased, read, or used any of the items mentioned in here, though, it's nothing personal. Perhaps I am guilty of judging a book by its cover.
Perhaps.
On my most recent trip, first time out after the Big Snow (I know, I know, the bookstore doesn't count as out - I'll make up for that later), I saw the following in the self-help/New Age section (though because they want you to think they're smart, Border's calls it "General Metaphysics"):
Your Future in a Coffee Cup. Actually, in my case, I'm pretty sure my future is in a coffee cup - many of them - most of them much larger than the cup included with the kit.
Silent Power. With a free CD! Erm...ah...being as how most CDs have an audio component, is this gem even worth it?
Angels And Ascended Masters. A list of higher beings - including Pagan Gods and others unlikely to wish for the appellation "angel" or "ascended master" - who are going to mount a class action lawsuit against Doreen Virtue or Sylvia Browne or whichever one the author is. (I can never tell, as these two are pretty much interchangeable, and both are essentially the Silver Ravenwolf of angelology). One of them has also written a book on the Archangel Michael which is reasonably entertaining and at best offers a few jumping-off-point ideas, but that might earn her an ass-kicking; I don't want to be there when that happens! - maybe the Offended Party will post it on YouTube. (I received this latter as a gift, so it doesn't really count as something I saw in the bookstore for this post.)
Pick one: The Lost Book of Enki or The Earth Chronicles Experience by Zecharia Sitchin. If you don't recognize that name, he's a major star in the You Are Descended From Aliens firmament.
Pretty much the entire compendium of Why We Must All Fear The Year 2012. And it's only 2010! Is this a sign of how many more books on 2012 we are going to have to endure over the next two years? If so, can we have the Apocalypse early? I'll even make the coffee.
So, what have you recently seen in the bookstore that gave you a laugh (or pissed you off)? Kits, "Tarot" decks, "informational" videos, all are ok as well as books. As long as (a) you saw it for sale for-reals, either in a bricks-and-mortar store or online and (b) preferably something you did not buy; if you bought it, it was for laughs.
Perhaps.
