Our first snow! Yay! That's the view out my back window. I love snow! Totally psyched! (...and in denial over the fact that it will doubtless turn to a nasty ice storm later in the night. Oh well, I have hot chocolate and extra work, I think I can handle it. ) Yeah, I'm aware that other elements of that pic don't present the area in the best light, but it's really quite pleasant. There are frequently kids on that trampoline (with or without the dogs, knives and other Capitally Dumb Stuff I've seen on it with them), and despite all appearances the shed on the right does not contain any rotting dead bodies (Realtor or otherwise). Just tools and a couple of abandoned bicycles I think the landlord is by now legally entitled to sell. What can I say, it's December.

Over, effectively, the same sort of weather conditions as in the last post...a few inches more of snow maybe. I still have to go for groceries; I'm hoping that "panic-inducing" stuff like the above will keep some of the crowds at bay. The only problem is that this situation provides the perfect excuse for my obnoxious neighbor to have his snotty kids over, play "Snowed in! Indoor basketball until Tuesday!", and act like I and the woman downstairs are being complete monsters for suggesting a snowman or, failing that, the use of the Indoor Voice. Edited to add: oh geez that's a seriously bemused looking Realtor over there. A good human being would probably throw open the window and offer the theory that the potential buyer may not be coming, and a really good human being would probably invite said Realtor in for coffee. But, being not much of a human being, I think I'll just sit and watch in case he needs someone with a shovel or some turkey sand to show up, because as it turns out there seems to be about a foot so far, it's still coming down, and that hill is pretty steep.

I am ready for warmer weather. I understand that I'm not as entitled to say this as, oh, the people facing massive, freezing blizzards in the midwest, but I'm ready nonetheless. It's just so blah here. I'm ready for some kind of change, and since we don't see snowy landscapes, or the changing of leaves, the only change we have here is in the mercury.

Yesterday was sunny and 50... it was gorgeous after weeks of bitter, bitter cold. Today is also supposed to go up to around 50, though there was frost everywhere this morning.

You can say that again. About eight times. LOL I am stranded up here in the mountains, and the more I look at the news and the power outage map the less I am sure there is even a city for me to go back to! The next train is Wednesday. If I can arrange a different way back (like driving my rental to a location closer in and paying an arm and a leg to leave it off at a different place than it originated) I might, but, there's hardly any point in going back if there's no electricity at either home or office and the subway isn't able to run above ground. On the plus side, the lights are on here, and there is the Internet. There's food (and alcohol if I want it) within walking distance. If I want to watch the game I can; I might find myself reporting a score to someone tomorrow, though. I suppose another plus side is, the Federal government is closed tomorrow and hence we will all be spared a standard day of government related gossip and bad news. Though that delays any news about our regular contract, and also I'd really like to know how people are doing and quit worrying that I'll get home to find the roof collapsed. One friend, though, I checked on. Qira has lights and phone and doesn't have to work tomorrow. They got 29 inches of snow and the road is not plowed; the young man they hired to shovel the walk wasn't able to finish by sundown and will return tomorrow. Qira's wife may have to work tomorrow, though.

Why Den won't be going out today. In pictures! (Note: that evergreen by the utility pole, in the mid-right of the last pic, usually presents a vertical orientation.) On the plus side, I'm back in town, having decided yesterday morning on one of those Wise Whims - you know the kind - that I just couldn't wait around for the Wednesday train, canceled it, and ate the $85 or so that it cost me to drive my rental across Virginia and return it at a different location. It turns out, of course, that once one factors in the hotel stay/per diem/extra day on the rental car plus the returned cost of the canceled train ticket, I'm saving the company money anyway. Also on the plus side, I'm back with my own book and video collection and all my food is of the type that keeps, due to my having stocked the kitchen with those things before leaving for a week anyway. A good lesson in preparing one's home for a good return when one leaves. On the minus side, no one, including me, can get out and earn any money today, and we all have to charge leave. Also, I may have committed myself to several days in a dark, chilly house (depending on if the electricity holds in the high winds that usually follow a blizzard; the condition of the lines you see in the one picture being pretty typical, that doesn't look great) with my noisy neighbor who of course has his bratty kids over for the hole-up, since they never spend such times at their mother's. I've already experienced his yeah? What are ya gonna do about it? attitude in the face of even the most polite request for a little quiet, and every indication I have seen from next door is that the "family" is sleeping all day and remaining awake all night during the storm. So, depending on the electricity, I may or may not be a happy camper come Friday morning (tomorrow if we're really lucky) which presents my best chance at a trip to the office. I still did the best thing, I'll wager. That Wednesday train is not running today, no surprise there as the area it has to go through to get to that station is a deep mountain gorge which I'd bet is right now full of snow, downed trees, and malfunctioning railroad electrical equipment; and based on their not having the train ready two days after the last storm, Friday isn't looking especially good either (that line runs Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays). Since if I'd gone earlier there would not have been any transit on this end, I probably rabbited out at the best possible time. Go me! Hopefully, the power will hold, and I'll have other stuff to post over the next day or two. Edited to add: I suppose I could bribe that neighbor with some of my typical techno-pagan-sized stash of candles and batteries, if it comes to that.

Wow, that is simply amazing!!! You guys are getting hammered and I'm enjoying higher than average temperatures and clear skies in Maine... What is wrong with *this* picture? Why not? Maybe the Weather Intelligences decided that having it the usual way all of the time wasn't fair. We are mostly dug out, but it's still rough getting around and my usual transport doesn't make it all the way to my office. I also called several people at said office in the mid-morning and got no answer, so I suspect that others are still at home also. I did leave two voice mails. What I'd really like to know is which personnel are going in on Monday, which is an optional "floater" holiday, so I can see when best to do some of my stuff that will involve certain individuals. Oh well. More or less everyone remotely associated with government in this area is "playing it by ear" - the only problem with that being, it only really works when someone stops being an "ear" and actually says something. Edited to add: Very glad I didn't push it about going: www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35367015

Yesterday morning, around 6:20, as I was struggling into and against consciousness, I noticed that the sky had the slightest tinge of impending dawniness about it... Hopes of Spring abound, despite continuing cold, wet whiteness...

I'm so jealous of your snow, but I understand your frustrations. It seems every week now we're getting Arizona's version of a Winter Storm, and I'm starting to get tired of the rain and gloominess. (Crazy, right?) I'm so ready for the blistering heat of summer.
