What the hell?
Sigh. Shawn and I bought a new washer a few months back and JUST began using it after we moved in. We were using Pop's old one at the old house.
When we bought it we had gone to buy a new dryer because the old one took a puke. We ended up buying the set since we would need it eventually. We had gone for a fancy new front loader model of the dryer when we decided on a set. The front loader were pretty expensive and the sales guy mentioned his wife had issues with the front load washer because the door seal would mildew if you didn't let it air out after washing. I had just heard the story of the 4 year old girl who drown because she climbed in and her toddling 10 month old brother turned it on. So NOPE that was out. So the guy suggested that we buy a fancier (yet cheaper) European brand of top load washer and dryer. The brand is Fischer and Paykel. We agreed to look at them, and I thought they were hideously ugly. Shawn liked the price and the fact that they only open on top so the kids couldn't play in them.
Well the salesmen didn't mention they were HIGH EFFICIENCY. Yeah we thought "Oooh Ahh, they dry things so fast, they are so cheap to run" Oh yeah and it was sooo quiet drying.
Well we got here and plugged in the washer. I thought "What the hell is going on to our darks? They are fading so quickly, they are spotty, do we have THAT hard of water?". The water here is really warm even on the cold setting so I thought that hard water and temperature were ruining our clothes. I had a hormone meltdown and began ranting about the cheap piece of crap that we bought, how it was the worst washer on the planet and we spend too much on our clothes to ruin them. Shawn started researching forums for possible causes and you would not BELIEVE the vast amount of people having the same issues. I mean TONS of people pissed that they bought this new age washer and it's a lump. Wait... What? It's a H E model? Are you kidding me? *cough cough sarcasm sarcasm* Shawn called the manufacturer and was told to use Tide brand soap. We have used Arm and Hammer powder for years.
Did they mention H E soap? No. Is it an H E model? Yes. Should we use H E soap? No. "Just Tide Powder". Oh and "don't use fabric softener it creates 'scrud' that will stain your clothes. And your dark clothes aren't faded, it is a whitish film from soap residue, No it won't ever come out".
I bought H E liquid anyway. Tide brand. For DOUBLE the price of my old soap. So much for cheaping out on the washer.
Oh, and our clothes? They're fine now. Great soap. Great. Smells great and works well.
